Basketball Coaching
The Art of Basketball Coaching: Knowing the Game Inside and Out
Basketball coaching is not a task that should be approached lightly. The coach needs to have a full and complete understanding of the game, seeing and understanding its patterns and formations inside and out in order to come up with the best offensive and defensive plans for capitalizing fully on the team’s strengths and covering up their weaknesses. From the moment the team selection begins until the time clock ticks down during the last game of the season, the coach is in charge of everything that takes place on the court, and as such needs to be an excellent, approachable communicator.
When selecting offensive and defense strategies, the coach must work together with the team in coming up with a series that plays that utilize the talents each player brings to the game. It is up to coach to convince the players that these are the best strategies for winning games and as such choose the appropriate drills during practices to make these plays the best they can be.
There’s No I in Team
Basketball coaching involves a careful eye during both practices and games to see which skills players excel and which ones they falter, and as such come up with a practice plan that addresses these concerns. When teaching new skills or helping players build on their existing repertoire of skills, always stress perfection with regards to the fundamentals. The fundamental skills of the game should be repeated so many times that they become second nature. However, if players are repeating these fundamental skills in a sloppy, incorrect manner, they will rarely be able to break from these molds come game time.
Another job of the basketball coach is to emphasize the spirit of teamwork amongst the players and put players in their proper positions. For example, the best shooters on the team should be the ones taking the most shots while the best rebounders should be in proper position when these shots are being taken. The coach must be able to justify the decisions made both on and off the court, and as such needs to recognize the strengths each player can bring to the game and tailor the game plan to reflect those strengths.
While players should be able to use their skills to the advantage of the team, when basketball coaching is it important to remember that the team’s welfare comes first. As such, coaches must employ constructive criticism when pointing out a player’s mistakes and remember that any suggestion made to one player should be applicable to all on the team.
Don’t Forget to Have Fun!
Above all else, it is up to coach to make sure players are having fun. Once practices become monotonous and too predicable, players begin to lose interest, which in turn causes their minds to wander and lose focus. By constantly adding new drills and exercises to your practice regiment, coaches are able to keep things fresh and exciting.
One of the best ways to have some fun at basketball practice is to eschew the traditional warm-up in favor of a 5-minute game of freeze tag. This gets players moving around while fostering the competitive spirit amongst teammates.
